FROM LINDA ’S DESK
As many of you are aware, University Compensation’s work follows a predictable annual cycle. As soon as September 1 merit increases are implemented, Compensation starts a new round of market analysis in preparation for advising the University’s leadership on the appropriate competitive pay program for the following fiscal year. We have just completed our market analysis for the FY08 salary program. Our ability to analyze the FY08 market – which translates into a salary program that allows Stanford to attract and retain the most talented employees – was enhanced via the use of a new web-based tool. Woven into the annual salary program cycle are other on-going major functions such as job classification review and our program of executive compensation support which has grown substantially since responsibility for this function was centralized to our department. Staffing the quarterly meetings of the Board of Trustees Committee on Compensation (as well as periodic unscheduled special sessions) has provided us a great opportunity to learn more about executive pay and benefits. In part, this is because the Committee is charged with reviewing and approving any change in compensation to a large group of employees including officers and other executives as well as selected coaches, senior staff and faculty. And, of course, sprinkled throughout the year are numerous special projects. To name just one recently completed and one that’s on the horizon:
Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to bring you up-to-date on our staffing. We want to welcome our new Admin, Elaine Eggen, who supports us in compensation and executive compensation. And, we wish Alice Chu all the best as she transitions from her role as a compensation analyst to that of full-time mom. Alice’s departure brings the number of positions currently open to two in our group. Interviews are underway and we hope to have good news to announce soon. Linda Lee, Director TIPS & TRICKS!
